The European Parliament passes a 1.6 billion euro bill for renewables

0
Last week, the European Parliament passed a 1.6 billion euro bill for research and development on non-nuclear energy, renewable energy technological improvement and energy efficiency. The budget is still to be ratified by the EU Member Countries during the next European Council. The figure for renewables, energy efficiency and technological improvements represents two thirds of the R&D budget. The amount totals 2.4 billion euros between 2007 and 2013, according to Spain's renewable energy association (APPA).

APPA is happy for the decision and reminds that "thanks to technological improvement, the price of wind power has dropped by 40% in the last 20 years".

“The drop in R&D in energy and, more notably, in renewables has been constant since the energy crisis suffered in the 70s -said APPA's President, Mr José María González Vélez–. Like then, the price of oil is forcing politicians to look for alternatives to fossil fuels and now, at last, they are focusing on renewable energy".

Mr González also highlighted Spain's role in this field, as Spain "is one of the world leaders in the matter". "Spain has scandalous inefficiency and foreign dependency levels but it must lead the European trend and strongly promote energy saving and alternative, clean, safe and inexhaustible power sources" concluded Mr González.
