The plant will be the largest facility of its kind in the country and is being built by Bolt Energy in Sao Desiderio, Bahia, in northeast Brazil. Yokogawa South America was approached by AREVA Renewables Brazil, a subsidiary of the French company AREVA SA.

The plant will have three power units with a total capacity of 150 MW and will use eucalyptus as a feedstock. Yokogawa will deliver its CENTUM VP integrated production control system, the Instrumented System ProSafe-RS Safety and various other products and will also be responsible for engineering. It will additionally provide assistance for installation and commissioning of these components. The plant will be connected to the grid in mid-2017.

“Yokogawa has a solid track record in Brazil, having installed over 500 control systems in a wide variety of industrial plants” said Yasuharu Shoda, President and CEO of Yokogawa South America. “Yokogawa's solutions help our customers operate their facilities safely and with high efficiency. Stimulated by this project, Yokogawa will continue focusing on electricity markets and renewable energy in Brazil and other countries in South America to help provide the stable power supply.”

Brazil and other South American countries largely depend on hydropower, however this source has become increasingly unreliable in recent years due to severe water shortages. There is therefore an urgent need to construct power plants that use alternative energy sources. Brazil is the largest producer of eucalyptus pulp and sugar cane which can be used in biomass plants.
