The film is called ‘Route 55’ and the aim is to demonstrate the advantages of silent, electric buses while also promoting the ElectrCity Project, in which various industry, research and community partners are collaborating to develop and test new solutions for public transport. The firm’s new electric bus, to be used on a new route in Gothenburg, Sweden, will be premiered on June 15th.

The electric bus is noiseless and emission-free, running on 100 percent renewable electricity. It will operate the new ‘Electric Bus Route 55’, from Chalmers Johanneberg to Lindholmen in Gothenburg, the latter destination being the site of Sweden’s first indoor bus stop.

The bus was developed by Volvo in cooperation with the Swedish Energy Agency, Region Västra Götaland, the City of Gothenburg, Göteborg Energi, Västtrafik, Lindholmen Science Park and Johanneberg Science Park. The intention is to establish new electric bus routes so that buses powered entirely by electricity will become a key part of Gothenburg’s public transport system.

“The buses will open up entirely new opportunities in urban planning” said Volvo Group PR Manager Karin Wik. “The buses are able to drive indoors and collect passengers at locations that are currently off-limit for buses. The silent, electric motor creates a comfortable environment and this film is intended to demonstrate, in a light-hearted and engaging way, the important role a silent bus could play in one of life’s small but important moments.”

Passengers are able to charge their mobiles on-board and the new buses will be to travel to locations in the city that are currently off limits as well as enabling new possibilities in city and urban planning. The project is in line with the city’s objective of becoming a climate-neutral city and increasing sustainable travel and includes the creation and trial runs of new bus-stop solutions, traffic-routing systems, safety concepts, energy supply and business models. The ElectriCity project also aims to attract more commuters on to public transport, clearing the way for more attractive public-transport solutions in the Västra Götaland region.

ElectriCity is a collaboration between research, industry and society in which new solutions for sustainable public transport of the future is developed, demonstrated and evaluated. Cooperation partners are the Volvo Group, Västra Götaland Region, Västtrafik, City of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, the Swedish Energy Agency, Johanneberg Science Park, Lindholmen Science Park, Business Region Gothenburg, Göteborg Energi, Älvstranden Utveckling, Akademiska Hus and Chalmers Fastigheter.
