Iberdrola Ingeniería and Gamesa have entered into an agreement with Honduras-based Grupo Terra to build the San Marcos wind farm in a turnkey project to cost 62 million euros.

The new 50MW wind farm will be located in the municipality of San Marcos de Colón, 140 kilometres south of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa and close to the border with Nicaragua. It will consist of 25 Gamesa G90 turbines with a unit capacity of 2MW each and a hub height of 70 metres with a rotor diameter of 90 metres. The wind farm will generate enough electricity to supply the needs of 100,000 homes and create around 200 jobs during the construction process.

Iberdrola’s subsidiary company will be in charge of engineering, procurement and construction and will also build an electrical substation and a 40 kilometre power line for uploading energy to the grid. The wind farm will be owned by Grupo Terra, one of the largest private energy project operators in Central America. The company is headquartered in Tegucigalpa and has extensive experience in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of renewable and thermal energy projects.

The deal will enable Iberdrola’s subsidiary to strengthen its foothold in the Honduras wind power market, having already last year commissioned Cerro de Hula wind farm, the largest wind project in Central America with a capacity of over 100MW.  This project was also constructed in a consortium with Gamesa.

Iberdrola Ingeniería has operations in almost 30 countries and its main activity is the completion of engineering and construction work for other companies in the group and for third parties, in the areas of generation, nuclear energy, networks and renewable energies.
