B&W awarded contracts for a state of the art biomass plant in Wales

The contracts have been awarded by Margam Green Energy Ltd to the company’s Danish subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S. The contracts cover engineering, procurement and operation of a state-of-the-art biomass power plant which will be built by B&W Vølund’s consortium partner, Interserve Construction Ltd.

The plant will burn 335,000 tons of wood biomass annually and generate around 40 MW of electricity. It will also be able to use municipal waste as a fuel source in the future and will incorporate advanced environmental controls designed by B&W Vølund and its Götaverken Miljö AB subsidiary. These will include a dry flue gas desulfurisation system (dry FGD), fabric filter baghouse, continuous emissions monitoring equipment and an advanced DynaGrate dynamic fuel combustion system.

“Because of their many environmental benefits, biomass and waste-to-energy continue to be preferred renewable energy options for many B&W customers around the world” said Vice President Paul Scavuzzo. “We thank Margam Green Energy for this opportunity and look forward to building and operating this advanced clean energy plant.”

The project will demonstrate B&W’s focus on growing its international power business and is the fifth major energy contract announced by B&W’s power generation subsidiary in the last seven months. Engineering of the plant is now underway in B&W Vølund’s Denmark offices with completion of the construction phase scheduled for the second quarter of 2017.
